Irvine-based Oculus VR Inc. canceled some preorders for its Rift VR DK2 headset after finding them for sale on eBay and other ecommerce sites. Fans discovered the listings and contacted the company, according to TechCrunch.com, an online trade publication.
The DK2 is expected to ship this week. The listings were for the sellers’ “place in line” to buy the second generation of the headset. One listing had an asking price of $5,000 compared to the DK2 headset’s preorder price of $350, according to reports.
Demand has been high for the headset, with more than 45,000 units preordered as of
July 1. The pace of orders has apparently
outstripped supply, with only 10,000 expected to ship this month, according to TechCrunch.
The DK2 units are meant to be sold primarily to game developers—“DK” stands for “developer kit”—to create content such as games and apps for the Rift.
Consumer sales are expected for future versions of the headsets.
