Laguna Beach-based virtual reality content maker NextVR Inc. has struck a deal with one of the world’s largest event companies to bring “hundreds” of live concerts to fans across the globe through virtual reality.
The partnership with Beverly Hills-based Live Nation Worldwide Inc.—which runs Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre and the House of Blues in Anaheim, among other venues—promises to bring fans up close and personal with their favorite artists.
The companies expect to soon announce the first live broadcast, likely a show sometime this summer, with fans able to access the content through the 3D VR audio platform NextVR has under development.
A full schedule of live events is expected to be announced later this year.
The content is accessible through the NextVR app in the Oculus Home app store for Samsung Gear VR users.
The Live Nation deal is one of several firsts for both NextVR and the emerging virtual reality segment.
NextVR also is developing a VR content guide for consumers delivered through an app or Web portal that aims to become the go-to source for scheduling, calendars and events.
The company, which was founded in 2009 and has raised $35.5 million to date, inked a five-year agreement in January with Fox Sports to broadcast sporting events in virtual reality.
