Costa Mesa is one of a handful of cities—and the only one in OC—to get access to Facebook’s latest tool, called Neighborhoods.
The city, along with San Antonio, Texas; Omaha, Neb.; Aurora, Colo.; Des Plaines, Ill.; and Cincinnati, were the latest to have the feature rolled out to this month. That followed a May pilot in the U.S. that began in Charlotte, N.C.; San Diego; Baton Rouge, La.; and Newark, N.J. The tool had already been available in Canada before launching in the U.S.
Facebook Neighborhoods localizes the social media experience acting as the designated place for residents of a particular city to connect and find local businesses, recommendations and groups. It’s essentially much of the same reasons many already use Facebook to connect with others, but creates a more specific place for users to join.
Users who choose to have a Neighborhoods profile can set it up with their name, neighborhood name and the same photo used for their regular Facebook profile.
Reid Patton, product manager for Facebook Neighborhoods, offered the following statement to the Business Journal on Costa Mesa’s inclusion in the rollout: “We’ve seen some incredible ways people in Costa Mesa have supported their neighbors through local groups and connected through common interests. We’re excited to understand what’s most valuable to people and get feedback to make it the best possible experience.”
