Chapman Gets Experian Gift

Chapman University plans to expand work in data science and artificial intelligence with a $750,000 donation from Experian PLC, which creates the Experian Assistant Professorship in Machine Learning.

The work will use machine learning in industry and academia to help change lives for the better, Chapman said.

Machine learning is a type of artificial intelligence in which computers adjust and adapt without being programmed to do so; computer programs in machine learning can change when exposed to new data.

Chapman’s Experian professorship will be held by Erik Linstead, director of its undergraduate programs in computer science, software engineering, and data analytics, and principal investigator at the school’s Machine Learning and Assistive Technology Lab.

The university also recently added a data analytics undergraduate degree.

Experian is one of three major U.S. credit reporting agencies. The Dublin, Ireland-based company keeps its North American headquarters in Costa Mesa.
