Anduril, Partners Go All-In on AI for Military

Defense company Anduril Industries has formed several industry partnerships designed to strengthen the company’s role in military-focused artificial intelligence.

Anduril has teamed up with data analytics firm Palantir Technologies to advance AI development, with plans to have other companies join them.

The two firms will work on improving data readiness for AI training and algorithm development while enhancing the ability to process data at scale.

Under the agreement, battlefield information generated by sensors, vehicles, robots and weapons will be collected by Anduril’s Lattice software and then pulled into a Palantir platform that will prepare the data for use in AI training and development.

“Ultimately, Palantir and Anduril expect to expand the partnership to other industry partners that have unique contributions to make to this unique mission. No single company is capable of delivering on the promise of AI for national security,” Anduril said in a statement on Dec. 6.

Anduril, co-founded by OC entrepreneur Palmer Luckey, has received major backing from Denver-based Palantir (Nasdaq: PLTR) and its co-founder Peter Thiel.

Expanding Use of Lattice

In another announcement, Anduril said Dec. 10 it is releasing Lattice SDK system to enable partners to build decentralized applications that operate directly on Lattice’s infrastructure.

The SDK provides developers with data model definitions, API bindings, code samples and reference implementations, making it easier to create solutions that seamlessly integrate into the Lattice ecosystem.

Anduril also said it has launched the Lattice Partner Program, an effort designed to enable companies to integrate diverse capabilities into Lattice.

“At launch, the program features a diverse cohort of over 10 partners, demonstrating the expansive range of capabilities that can be integrated through Lattice.”

Among them are Apex, Forterra, Impulse Space, Numerica, Oracle, Saronic, Scale AI, Spire Global, Striveworks, Textron Systems and Valinor with “each contributing unique technologies that enhance operational efficiency and situational awareness,” Anduril said.

In an earlier announcement, Anduril said Dec. 4 that it has formed a strategic partnership with OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, to develop ways to protect U.S. and allied forces.

The collaboration will “develop and responsibly deploy advanced artificial intelligence solutions for national security missions,” according to Anduril.

“By bringing together OpenAI’s advanced models with Anduril’s high-performance defense systems and Lattice software platform, the partnership aims to improve the nation’s defense systems that protect U.S. and allied military personnel from attacks by unmanned drones and other aerial devices,” Anduril said in a statement.

Separately, Archer Aviation (NYSE: ACHR) of San Jose said Dec. 12 it had entered into an exclusive agreement with Anduril to develop a hybrid vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft for the military.
