5G Still Up In Air

A technical conference in Anaheim was abuzz with talk of 5G technology—and its still-in-process deployment and application.

The InterPack confab this month was marked by discussion among attendees and speakers on the communications technology advance, aimed at providing high-bandwidth connectivity up to 100 times faster than current standards.

Local companies involved in building 5G infrastructure include Newport Beach-based Mobilitie and the Irvine office of Houston-based Crown Castle.

University of California-Irvine researchers, meanwhile, told the Business Journal in July that they are already at work on pushing technology into 6G territory.

For more on the fifth generation of cellular wireless technology, as well as items on air taxis and how Hong Kong protests could affect the big gamer show BlizzCon in November, see the Oct. 21 print edition of the Business Journal.
