WHY: Co-founded nonprofit in 2005 along with late husband, Augie Nieto, after he was diagnosed with the muscle-wasting condition commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Augie was the founder and chairman of Augie’s Quest and of exercise equipment company Life Fitness.

BY THE NUMBERS: Organization has raised nearly $200 million in support of research aiming to determine the cure, causes and treatments for ALS. Husband and high school sweetheart Augie Nieto died in February after a nearly 18-year battle with ALS.

FUTURE PLANS: This year received unanimous support from the nonprofit’s board to be the next chair of Augie’s Quest. Board member of the ALS Therapy Development Institute, a research partner of the nonprofit, which Augie’s Quest has granted nearly $50 million. Irvine-based Eledon Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq: ELDN) last year revealed “positive topline results” from a Phase 2a trial for Tegoprubart, a drug which demonstrated safety, target engagement and biomarker responses in patients living with ALS.

I promised Augie on the day he left his body behind, that I will never give up his quest and that we all will collectively carry on his mission.”
