WHY: Ivascyn oversees 254 portfolio managers who handle $1.8 trillion in investments at one of the world’s largest money management firms, which is a unit of German insurer Allianz. Roman, who took reins in 2016, is expanding beyond bonds into alternative assets; in April filed to spin off mortgage REIT.
HOW: Both earned MBAs from University of Chicago. After 2008 financial crisis, Ivascyn rose to fame by buying cheap non-Agency mortgage-backed assets as co-manager of Income Fund (PIMIX), which is company’s largest at $118.4 billion and best performing fund in its category in past decade. Roman, former Goldman Sachs banker, credited with turning around Man Group PLC, one of the world’s largest publicly traded alternative asset managers.
RECENT: Pair in 2018 oversaw 3.1% revenue growth to $4.67 billion and operating profit climbed 1.9% to $1.9 billion.
QUOTABLE: “We don’t think a recession’s imminent. In fact, we still see generally positive growth across the globe this year. We see the U.S. economy growing in the 2% range as well.” — Ivascyn on PIMCO website in April
PERSONAL: Ivascyn fan of Boston sports teams while Roman’s favorite is London soccer club Arsenal. Roman president of PIMCO Foundation.
