AirTran Airways will double its service from John Wayne Airport to the Mexican resort of Cabo San Lucas during the peak summer season next year.
The airline, operated by Dallas-based Southwest Airlines Co., began once-a-day daily flights from Orange County to Mexico City and Cabo last summer. Starting June 2, it will offer two daily flights to Cabo until at least Aug. 9.
The airline said it will assess the service after the peak season and consider whether to add flights permanently.
Low-cost carrier Interjet started JWA flights to Mexico City and Guadalajara in October. Interjet has secured Federal Aviation Administration approval to fly to Cabo from OC, but Interjet Chief Executive Jose Luis Garza has said the airline first would monitor AirTran’s experience with the route. Garza had also expressed interest in service to Puerto Vallarta and other beach destinations in Mexico if its initial service out of JWA proves successful.
