BP Cardboard Box Plant to Close

A 465,000-square foot corrugated box plant in Buena Park run by Atlanta-based Georgia-Pacific LLC will close by Sept. 1, the company said.

Company executives met privately with the roughly 150 employees at the facility on January 19 to deliver the news, said Julia VanDeWater, manager of manufacturing communications.

The company is shuttering the plant for efficiency reasons; Georgia-Pacific operates similar ones nearby, including one in La Mirada, VanDeWater said.

“Our strategy is to be profitable,” she said.

The company plans to meet with union representatives of hourly employees, and has met with salaried employees, to discuss severance packages and job placement options.

“We value the good work of the employees of our Buena Park facility and are committed to working with them throughout this process,” VanDeWater said.

Georgia-Pacific LLC is owned by Koch Industries in Wichita, Kan.
