Work It!

Women Helping Women/Men2Work hosted more than 20 foster youth from Orangewood Children’s Foundation at a Boys2Men event June 29 to help prepare the young men confidently enter the workforce.

The Bascom Group LLC, based in Irvine, was the event’s main sponsor and supplied suits and ties for the youth to choose from.

A former foster youth made a motivational presentation, and the event also included a workshop on job-seeking skills.

Closing on a Million

Automaker Hyundai Motor America in Costa Mesa joined TCA Architects as the presenting sponsor of TCA’s 13th Charity Golf Tournament on behalf of Habitat for Humanity of Orange County. The tournament, which took place June 20 at Oak Creek Golf Club in Irvine, raised more than $60,000.

Events included a hosted lunch prior to tee off and an award ceremony and celebration.

The tournament has raised more than $800,000 since 2000 for new neighborhoods in Westminster, Cypress, Anaheim and Fullerton.

Volunteer Council Honored

The Points of Light Foundation honored the Corporate Volunteer Council of Orange County with the Fast Start Award at its annual Conference on Volunteering and Service on June 20 in Washington, D.C.

The council received the award because in February 2013, volunteers from the 26 member companies joined with residents of the Oak View community to restore a playground by painting over graffiti and planting greenery. It pairs nonprofit organizations with volunteers from companies throughout Orange County, including Pimco, whose vice president of operations and director of community outreach, Sarah Middleton, is the council’s chair; Western Digital; Allergan Inc.; Oakley; and Cox Communications.

Building a Future

Project Hope Alliance is expanding into the Newport-Mesa Unified School District with its program of educating homeless children.

Newport Beach-based Pacific Investment Management Co. donated 10 computer stations to the alliance’s new computer lab.

Irvine-based Taco Bell Corp., Christidis General Contracting of La Habra, and Orange County-based Work Space Consulting helped with the build-out of the site.

The Orange County Home Depot regional stores built the computer lab and donated a kitchen stove.

Orange-based Kerr Corp. donated $13,202 toward the project; Santa Ana-based Corinthian Colleges contributed $32,000 to the alliance; and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP’s Irvine office donated $2,000.

The expansion includes a new alliance headquarters at 1954 Placentia St. in Costa Mesa.

Nonprofits Get 1K Grants

Wells Fargo donated $50,000 to local Orange County nonprofit groups during the company’s annual Community Partners Breakfast at the Delhi Community Center in Santa Ana.

The bank presented $1,000 grants to representatives from the groups, including the Orangewood Children’s Foundation and United Way.

Store managers of the 50 branches in the Orange County coastal division each chose a nonprofit. The division encompasses South Orange County and coastal communities extending north.
