PHILANTHROPY

Transformative Gift

With the support of a $1.5 million donation from Julia and George Argyros, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Orange Coast on May 7 broke ground on renovations to its Costa Mesa clubhouses.

The oldest club site in Orange County, founded in 1941, will undergo $3 million of renovations as part of the $6.5 million Pursuing Greatness campaign. The campaign is an initiative that enables the organization to serve more kids and families, enhance the local communities by becoming a hub for nonprofit and city partnerships, and ensure financial sustainability for the clubs moving forward.

Along with the Argyros family, funding is coming from a $250,000 matching gift provided by American Career College Chief Executive David Pyle. Once finished, the Costa Mesa club will be named the Argyros Center for Opportunity.

The site will include a teen center, three additional learning labs to facilitate mentoring and education, an art wall, renovated gym, upgraded technologies, and flexible space for increased capacity and family/community programming.

Construction partners include IA Architects, DBaC Inc., and Antis Roofing & Waterproofing and General Coatings.

A Day of Golf and Giving

Tilly’s Inc. 12th Annual Dia De Los Tilly’s Charity Golf Tournament, which was held on April 29 at the Mission Viejo Country Club, raised $200,000 to benefit Tilly’s Life Center. TLC aims to empower teens to overcome adversity by teaching effective life tools that equip them with the confidence and self-esteem they need to make positive changes in their own lives. TLC currently hosts programs in Orange County, Riverside, Los Angeles and San Diego.

Event sponsors included Above Sea Level, Labeltex, CSI Electrical Contractors Inc., Fila, Adidas, Igloo, Quiksilver, Direct Edge, Parker Printing Inc., GoldLine Brands, Trust Me Vodka, MoonGoat Coffee, Vans, Salty Crew, Volcom and Palm Golf Co. Lunch was provided for golfers by Sgt. Pepperoni’s Pizza and Chronic Tacos.

Supporting Critical Needs

Nearly 600 professionals from top real estate companies and financial institutions attended the fourth annual Orange County Real Estate Luncheon on April 18 at Hotel Irvine. The event was held in partnership with the Orange County Community Foundation and raised over $700,000 to support the critical needs of local veterans and their families.

Bank of America was the presenting sponsor and was joined by founding sponsors CBRE Group Inc., Donahue Schriber, Mark IV Capital, Rancho Mission Viejo LLC, Fidelity National Title, Craig Realty Group, Lyon Living and KBS Realty Group.

This year’s event featured a keynote address from 26th National Security Adviser Gen. H.R. McMaster.

The events helped raise funds for the Orange County Veterans Initiative. To date, OCVI has granted over $3 million to nonprofits reaching more than 17,000 veterans and their families.

“People want to see their money put to good use with measurable results,” said Patrick S. Donahue, chairman and chief executive of Donahue Schriber. “That is why Donahue Schriber and its executives underwrite the cost of the luncheon. We want sponsors and attendees to know that their money is going directly to the nonprofits that support our local vets.”

Springtime Celebration

Cisco Systems Inc., Farmers and Merchants Bank Foundation and Tiller Constructors joined MemorialCare Medical Group, Greater Newport Physicians, OC Surgeons and Sirius Healthcare as sponsors of MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center Foundation’s Spring Gala 2019.

The black-tie soiree held on March 30 at Montage Laguna Beach netted more than $360,000. All of the proceeds will directly benefit cancer and infusion services at Saddleback Medical Center. The event also celebrated the opening of the Jean Howard Infusion Center, which was recently dedicated in honor of the former cancer patient.

More than 400 guests attended the event, which was themed after the Greek island of Santorini, with white stucco houses accented with bright pink bougainvillea, carved into the cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean waters.

The event included dinner, live entertainment, a live auction and a fund-a-need that by itself raised more than $95,000.
