Pre-Pre-Med Course at JSerra; UCLA’s Legal Win

We need doctors, so why wait until college to begin training them? JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano is teaming this spring with Mission Hospital (where JSerra director Peter Bastone is CEO) on a four-year, science-focused pre-med program. Students will shadow surgeons, neurologists and other doctors, watch live broadcasts of operations, work in clinics and receive diploma citations. It’s another step for the seven-year-old school founded and backed by Irvine lawyer Tim Busch. JSerra sent all 176 of last year’s grads to college and recently refinanced $55.5 million of debt with California state-exempt bonds. The journal ranked 2,000 current or recent CEOs on shareholder return and change in market value. Apple’s Steve Jobs placed first, former eBay CEO and California gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman was eighth …

Heidi Miller notes that now three OC icons have died on Jan. 11—John Crean in 2007 at age 81, Carl Karcher in 2008 at age 90 and Harriett Wieder last week at age 89: “All of the same generation, all strong and courageous individuals, all standing up for their very different beliefs, popular or not.” The life of former Supe Wieder will be celebrated Jan. 31 at 3 p.m. at University Synagogue in Irvine.
