DNC, Angels Set to Profit on President’s Visit; Elon on Way

President Barack Obama was getting close to OC as the Insider went to press, carrying the promise of plenty of memories for UCI grads set to hear his commencement address at Angel Stadium. Another byproduct of the presidential visit: a chunk of cash for the Democratic National Committee from a breakfast fundraiser expected at Getty heir Anne Earhart’s place in North Laguna Beach prior to the Saturday morning motorcade to the ballpark … That wasn’t the only cash generated by the trip, which put $1.2 million into Arte Moreno’s pocket, thanks to his ball club’s master lease on the stadium, which seemed to be the lone local venue that could handle the demand for tickets and security … The president’s visit was a capper for UCI Chancellor Michael Drake, who’s bound for Ohio State and got a warm sendoff and a custom-made Fender Stratocaster during a gathering of several hundred students, faculty, staff and friends last week … Broadcom Corp.’s Henry Samueli’s name is on the engineering schools at both UCI and UCLA—but he’s more than just a benefactor at the latter, which still lists him as faculty all these years after the one-time professor went into chip making full time in 1995. Samueli called it the world’s longest leave of absence, a quip that came during a panel discussion for the Jewish Federation & Family Services Orange County’s Conversation on Entrepreneurship last week at the Pacific Club, where Opus Bank boss Stephen Gordon impressed as moderator … More from academia: Paul and Marybelle Musco headlined last week’s groundbreaking for a 60,000-square-foot addition to the downtown Santa Ana campus of the Orange County School of the Arts. One of three wings will be named for Marybelle (see related photos in Special Report: Commercial Development, page 17) … The Muscos are kind to artists of all sizes, which came in handy for pal Placido Domingo, who visited OC for a performance as Athanaël in the L.A. Opera’s recent production of Thaïs at the Segerstrom Center. Domingo doesn’t eat for awhile before he takes the stage, and Thaïs runs about three hours, which had the tenor worried about where he’d get a hearty meal after the Saturday night show. Musco told another pal, Franco Barone, to keep the lights on for him, Marybelle, Domingo and a handful of friends, who got their mangia on till 2:30 a.m. at Il Barone on Martingale … Some (lunch) counter intelligence from our Mark Mueller: The Chippy, a popular fish-and-chips stand at the Palm Café Food Court near JWA, is among the charter tenants at Shaheen Sadeghi’s recently opened Packing House foodie court in downtown Anaheim. The Packing House also features a location of The Kroft, which Mueller boldly ranks on par with downtown L.A.’s Philippe’s for French Dip. He also notes The Kroft is expected to open a second location at the District at Tustin Legacy … President Obama isn’t the only pol raising money around here. Senior GOP member of the House Science Committee Dana Rohrabacher has a big draw for his June 22 “birthday bash fundraiser”—Tesla Motors founder Elon Musk. The reception at the NB home of Laura Lee and Dick Browne is $200 a person. Dinner at Portabello, the oceanfront home of Mr. and Mrs. Fariborz Maseeh, is $2,000 a pop … Personal to Joe Kiani: thanks again for the Farsi lesson—the wedding toast was very well-received.
