Midtown Manhattan subway riders now have uninterrupted wireless connectivity as part of a massive telecom project undertaken by infrastructure company Boldyn Networks US.
Earlier this month, Irvine-based Boldyn launched its 5G network throughout the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s 42nd Street Shuttle line in New York City.
Boldyn says it is the “first line in the New York subway system to now have full 5G connectivity.”
“Turning up the 42nd Street Shuttle line was a milestone accomplishment in our larger installation program across the entire underground subway,” Boldyn Networks U.S. ÂCEO Christos Karmis said.

Boldyn said in a statement that 100,000 daily riders now get uninterrupted wireless connectivity throughout the underground route, which runs from Times Square to Grand Central Station.
The company is handling the 5G network upgrade and expansion for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in the New York metropolitan area, which reports indicate is the largest wireless deployment project in the country.
The project will double the size of the 5G fiber network for the MTA and will include 418 track miles and up to 20 separate river crossings, according to a 2023 announcement.
Free Wi-Fi service will also be expanded to all 191 above-ground subway stations and 21 Staten Island Railway stations.
