INNOVATION: EDWARD KIM

PHYSICIAN-IN-CHIEF, CITY OF HOPE ORANGE COUNTY

WHY: Lung cancer specialist on planning team for $1.5 billion campus underway in Irvine at the Great Park Neighborhoods, the 190,000-square-foot Lennar Foundation Cancer Center opened last year and an under-construction specialty cancer hospital next door. Local network includes four regional clinics: two in Newport Beach, one in Huntington Beach and one in Irvine. The group first entered OC in 2020 with its center located near Fashion Island.
BY THE NUMBERS: City of Hope is currently working to raise $300 million to go toward that goal of investing $1.5 billion in Orange County from donors; it counts 15,000 benefactors in Orange County.
FUTURE PLANS: The hospital is on schedule and on budget for completion in 2025. It will be the only place in the western United States completely dedicated to cancer, according to Kim.
IN THEIR WORDS: “We’ll be able to provide expertise, and innovative precision medicine closer to where [patients] live.”
