WHY: Longtime backers of environmental causes who made their money through stock investments and real estate deals largely in Los Angeles. Gave $50M to preserve the Banning Ranch wetlands in West Newport Beach and Costa Mesa.

IN THE NEWS: Gave additional $50M to the Nature Conservancy for largest nature preserve in California, spanning 72,000 acres about 100 miles north of downtown LA.
