Porsche Design Restores 1972 Porsche 911

Costa Mesa lifestyle brand celebrates 50th anniversary

Porsche Design of America, the luxury automaker’s lifestyle brand based in Costa Mesa, announced today an upcoming auction for a restored 1972 Porsche 911 S 2.4 Targa sports car this December for its 50th anniversary.

The original vehicle was designed by Porsche Design Founder and Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche in 1963 before he started the brand in 1972.

The restoration of the Porsche 911 was a collaboration between Porsche Classic and Porsche Design, and it will be sold with a matching Chronograph 1 all-black timepiece also from 1972, according to officials.

Both items have an estimated value of $275,000 to $325,000 and will first make its U.S. debut at Monterey Car Week before the auction in New York.

“We deliberately took a different approach with this project. We’ve created a unique vehicle that blends tradition and present day, and bears the signature of Ferdinand Alexander Porsche,” said Uwe Makrutzki, head of Porsche classic factory restoration at Porsche AG.

Porsche Design also marked its 50th with an anniversary display at its showroom in South Coast Plaza for July including a new edition of the sports car, the ‘911 Edition 50 Years Porsche Design’ limited to 750 units.

The 2022 vehicle made its U.S. debut at the Costa Mesa shopping center and will be on display until August.
