Wet Seal Beats Views, PacSun Misses

Anaheim-based Pacific Sunwear of California Inc. saw a modest rise in December same-store sales while Foothill Ranch’s Wet Seal Inc. beat expectations for the month.

Wet Seal, which sells clothes for young women at some 400 stores, said sales at stores open at least a year surged 38.5% percent in December, surpassing Wall Street estimates.

Total sales grew 10.6% to $70 million for the five weeks ended Dec. 31 from a year earlier.

Pacific Sunwear came in slightly below what analysts were looking for with a 1% rise in same-store sales for the month. Wall Street expected a 3% gain.

The company’s dominant PacSun chain of surfwear stores saw same-store sales rise 1.5%, offsetting a 2.3% decline at its smaller d.e.m.o. chain selling urban styles.

Total sales for December were $242.4 million, up 11% from a year ago.
