Yamaha Motor to Sell Electric Bikes

Yamaha Motor Corp. USA said it plans to enter the U.S. electric bicycle market next year.

The Cypress-based unit of Yamaha Motor Corp. in Japan makes and markets motorcycles, snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, golf cars, electric bikes, wave runners and even crop-dusting drones. It will showcase prototype models of the Yamaha Power Assist Bicycles brand this month in Las Vegas at Interbike, the largest bicycle trade event in North America and owned and operated by San Juan Capistrano-based Emerald Expositions.

Yamaha’s parent began manufacturing electric bicycles in 1993 and has since “produced more than 4 million drive units and sold over 2 million Yamaha power assist bicycles.”

“Everyone at Yamaha is excited to be entering the rapidly expanding U.S. e-Bike market and sharing Yamaha’s passion for exciting products and legendary product performance, innovative design, quality and reliability with the growing e-Bike audience,” New Business Development Division Manager Rob Trester said in a statement.
