WD Offers Gamers A Helping Hand

Memory products maker Western Digital Corp. (Nasdaq: WDC) has come to the rescue of gamers running out of storage space.

A series of newly introduced WD Black storage products is designed for gamers who face the “dreaded challenge” of choosing which of their favorite games to sacrifice when they reach the storage capacity limit of their gaming station.

The five new external solutions are created to be the “wingman in battle, partner in crime and teammate on the bench,” the company said when announcing the new line of products.

On Aug. 20, Western Digital said the external storage devices for PC and console will enable access to more winning gameplay, without maxing out gaming storage.

100 Gigabytes/Game

Modern gaming applications call for higher performance and file sizes, with some games approaching or exceeding file sizes of 100 gigabytes. That presents a challenge for gamers who don’t want to sacrifice their current favorite games while trying out the latest games on the market.

The new products are designed to provide the performance, capacity and reliability to help PC and console gamers drive their game and play without limits.

“We constantly hear from gamers about how the performance and capacity limitations of their current systems challenge the quality of their gaming experiences,” said Susan Park, vice president of product management, content solutions at Western Digital.

“With the latest additions to our WD Black portfolio, anyone from the casual to hardcore gamer can now capture a variety of games, in one accessible place.”

$90-$300

The new products in the WD Black gaming portfolio are: P10 Game Drive, P50 Game Drive,  D10 Game Drive, D10 Game Drive for Xbox One, and P10 Game Drive for Xbox One.

Prices vary depending on model and capacity, with varying availability dates.

For example, the P10 Game Drive comes in capacities of 2 terabytes up to 5 terabytes and the manufacturer’s suggested retail price ranges from $89.99 up to $149.99, and is currently available.

The D10 Game Drive for Xbox One with 12 terabytes capacity has a suggested price of $299.95 and will be available in the current quarter ending Sept. 30.

Western Digital maintains a 490,000-square-foot office for research and development, and administrative, marketing and sales departments in Irvine’s Park Place campus. It said earlier this year it was eliminating 102 jobs there, or 7% of the local workforce, as part of a cost-cutting initiative.
