UCI Appoints Permanent Research Leader

University of California-Irvine named Pramod Khargonekar vice chancellor for research, effective June 30. He replaces James Hicks, who was interim vice chancellor of research for about a year.

Khargonekar will provide strategic direction for the Office of Research, which supports research conducted by UCI faculty. His appointment by UCI Chancellor Howard Gillman follows a national search.

He’s held federal and academic positions, most recently the assistant directorship for engineering at the National Science Foundation.

Khargonekar received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and a master’s in mathematics and a doctorate in electrical engineering from the University of Florida.

UCI is a research university classified by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education to indicate universities that engage in extensive research activity.
