Tennis Club Seeks Clients on Groupon

A local sporting club has turned to Groupon to boost its membership ranks.

The Newport Beach Tennis Club is offering a 96% discount on family or individual membership, a $3,600 value, according to the e-commerce website.

The $119 promotion includes a two-month “tennis play on 19 courts, a Junior Olympic size saline pool, fitness center, a full-service restaurant and bar, and a variety of parties and social events.”

The club opened in 1966 with the goal of being the “Forest Hills of the West.”

“The original pioneers sought to create an idyllic, resort like setting where competition and friendliness were paramount,” according to the club’s website. “An important aspect of the original founding philosophy is to treat each member the same, regardless of skill level and ability.”

It is one of the two largest tennis clubs in the city, along with Palisades Tennis Club, which formerly operated as John Wayne Tennis Club.

The club is leasing the land from an affiliate of Diamond Development Group, the San Gabriel-based owner of Irvine’s Diamond Jamboree shopping center. That group, whose owners live in Irvine, bought the 7.6-acre site in 2016 for about $12.4 million, property records show. At the time of the sale, it was reported that the club’s lease was set to expire in 2021.

The tennis club has hosted Davis Cup matches in the past and is gearing up for the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships to be held Nov. 6 through 10.
