Struppa’s Strong Start; About Our OC 500; Fall Fashion Find

Daniele Struppa is off to a strong start on establishing his own manner of maintaining the high profile of the president’s office he takes over from the ever-energetic Jim Doti at Chapman U. A sampling of the stars of academia, business and the arts expected at Struppa’s inauguration on Sept. 30 on campus includes film director Werner Herzog, Google’s chief evangelist for brand marketing, Gopi Kallayil, and physicist and mathematician Sir Roger Penrose, who shared the prestigious Wolf Prize in Physics with Stephen Hawking … Struppa has taken time to tend to grassroots in the month or so ahead of this week’s grand affair, making himself available for more intimate meetings with all sorts of constituencies and community groups. The Insider hears he’ll dig back into work soon after the inaugural party wraps up, getting an executive perspective during a trip to Sicily with Chapman’s board of trustees, where they’ll get some personal perspective on him, with a chance to meet some of his family … Another nice touch for Struppa’s inaugural ceremony: it’s slated for the Musco Center, which last week claimed a Citation Award from the American Institute of Architects Orange County Chapter and an Award of Merit from the Engineering News Record … More kudos on the architecture front, this time for Carl McLarand and his team at MVE & Partners in Irvine, whose work on the Emerald residential development in L.A. and the MB360 project in S.F. also got nods from the local AIA (see related Special Report: Architecture & Engineering, page 17) … McLarand might have to put up another shelf to fit the honors, which are just the latest earned in a career of significance in OC and beyond. That’s the sort of track record that might just land a person on our OC 500, a special project that’s now in the works and is expected to culminate with a book of 500 local influentials later this year. Or feel free to drop a line if you haven’t received an email but think you should … This Santa Ana-based ice cream vendor ought to be first in line if anyone ever starts handing out awards for best-looking food trucks … Busy week for our Rick Reiff, who’s lined up to host the OC chapter of the British-American Business Council’s annual awards dinner on Sept. 28 at the Westin South Plaza, where Andy Bird, chairman of Walt Disney International, will keynote. Reiff will rise early the following day to moderate a panel talk about the latest economic and demographic data and analysis from contrarian author Joel Kotkin and Chapman U.’s Marshall Toplansky. Expect to be challenged by their take on the “OC Model” at the Packing House in downtown Anaheim (see related story on residential development plan, page 1) … Sullivan says: Nalu’s Island Grill in the Quail Hill Shopping Center keeps it real on the poke craze … Fashion Island’s Personal Shopping & Styling Services says: “Decorated & Adorned” is a key direction in women’s fashion this fall.
