The future home of 39 Commons is about a mile south of Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park.
The Anaheim property was a landfill in the early 1960s and later a mobile home site; it has stood largely unused since the mid-1980s, picking up the nickname “Sinkin’ Lincoln” because of sinkholes resulting from its days as a landfill.
The city bought the land in 2001, and soon after began negotiations with Zelman Development Co. to redevelop the site once remediation work was completed.
The Business Journal last reported on the site in 2016, when Zelman said it was planning a nearly 300,000-square-foot project called Westgate Center.
It was to be anchored by a pair of big-box retailers, along with restaurants, other shops and a public plaza. That version of the project didn’t move ahead.
