Samuelis Give UCI $200M for Health

The University of California-Irvine received a $200 million gift from Henry and Susan Samueli, Chancellor Howard Gillman calling it one of the largest donations made to a public university. UCI will use the money to initiate an integrative approach to health and well-being.

Of the $200 million, $55 million will build a home for the Susan and Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences at the corner of Bison and California avenues. The rest will go into a permanent endowment for faculty recruitment, student scholarship and other spending.

The money comes from the Samueli Foundation in Corona del Mar. Henry Samueli co-founded chipmaker Broadcom, and the Samuelis started the foundation in 1998, the year the company went public. Broadcom, now chartered in Singapore, has its headquarters in San Jose and maintains Orange County operations.

Gillman announced the gift in a live presentation at the Irvine Barclay Theatre.
