Fans of “The Matrix” franchise may have celebrated “The Matrix Resurrections” release late last year, but Foothill Ranch-based digital still and motion camera maker Red Digital Cinema LLC could also toast its role in the movie.
The Lana Wachowski-directed flick was filmed on Red and adds yet another title to the camera company’s ever-growing roster of movies using its gear. The latest Matrix movie used Red’s Ranger and Komodo cameras.
The cameras weren’t in full production at the time of filming, making The Matrix the first production to record with them, Executive Producer Garrett Grant said in a behind-the-scenes video posted to Red’s YouTube account Dec. 22, when the movie was released.
Red’s cameras received a nod from Grant for being “small, compact, great resolution. The best of the best right now.”
The Matrix franchise, which debuted in 1999, now totals four films. Wachowski pointed out earlier versions of the movie utilized a lot of movie set lighting. She said her evolution as a director changed that for “The Matrix Resurrections,” which uses plenty of natural light.
“To actually shoot The Matrix is humbling. I mean, this is why we do it,” co-owner and President Jarred Land said in Red’s video.
The executive went to San Francisco while the movie was being shot to present Wachowski with a custom Komodo that was pink, orange and red to match the director’s hair color.
Land owns Red with founder Jim Jannard, who announced his retirement about two years ago. Jannard is also the founder of Foothill Ranch-based Oakley.
