True Romance
The Mission Preservation Foundation held its annual Romance of the Mission benefit gala on Sept.14 on the grounds of the historic Mission San Juan Capistrano. More than 500 guests attended the event, which raised more than $600,000.
Madeline and James Irvine Swinden, president of The Irvine Museum, were honored during the celebration for their longtime philanthropic work toward preservation of the mission.
Madeline co-founded Friends of the Mission in 1996, is the founding chairwoman of the benefit gala, and serves on the Mission Preservation Foundation board. James is a fifth-generation Californian, founder and president of The Irvine Museum, and a devotee of California history and art.
“We’re honored to be recognized and to share the magic of this evening with each of you,” said Madeline. “We thank you for your continued dedication and support of this most sacred space.”
Shooting for a Cure
The eighth Annual Getzlaf Golf Shootout, a two-day charity event that began with a private auction on Sept. 7 at Time Nightclub in Costa Mesa, followed with a celebrity golf tournament the following day at Monarch Beach Golf Links in Dana Point. The event raised more than $560,000 for CureDuchenne, a leading nonprofit organization focused on funding research to find a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. It brings together athletes, celebrities and community leaders and was hosted by Anaheim Ducks Captain Ryan Getzlaf and his wife, Paige.
The presenting sponsor was ActivePDF Inc. for the third consecutive year.
“When we choose sponsors for the Getzlaf Golf Shootout, we look for more than someone just writing a check, we look for a caring and committed partnership,” Getzlaf said. “We look forward to working with ActivePDF once again on making this a successful event, raising money, and building awareness for the kids and their families dealing with this terrible disease.”
Other event sponsors included Pacific Premier Bank, Master Builders of America, Bohdi Leaf Coffee Traders, Air Control Systems, Pinnacle Property Management Services LLC and Ayres Hotel.
Ready for Close-Up
South Coast Plaza, Chloé, Van Cleef & Arpels, Tito’s Handmade Vodka and Mangiamo Gelato Caffe were among sponsors of the 2018 South Coast Repertory gala, “Places, Please!” The event, which was at the Westin South Coast Plaza, raised more than $250,000 to support the theater’s on-stage artistry and its education and outreach programs.
Approximately 200 guests enjoyed the theatrically themed evening. One of the highlights was watching theater artisans demonstrate the various steps, including costuming and makeup, that it takes to prepare an actor to go on stage.
During dinner, conservatory alumni performed an original play that highlighted offerings in SCR’s upcoming 2018-19 season.
