OCSA Gets Hand From Argyros Clan; Different Donalds

George and Julia Argyros were there for daughter Stephanie when she took on the role of co-chair of the Southern California chapter of We Day back in May, donating $1 million and opening their Harbor Island home to kick off the cause. The couple will be there for daughter Lisa, too, as she continues to make local schools a focus of the family’s philanthropy. The latest example is a $1.5 million donation that’s expected this week for the Argyros Science Center at the Orange County School of the Arts, a public charter school in Santa Ana. The science program at the downtown campus is on track for a spot alongside the Marybelle Musco Dance Center and the Hal & Jeanette Segerstrom Family Music Center in spiffy digs at a 60,000-square-foot addition slated to open in August … The family also made a key donation to the Lisa Argyros and Family Science Center at the private Sage Hill School in Newport Coast a couple of years ago, and their willingness to be there for public and private schools offers a reminder of a sort of diversity—diversity of thought—that’s a seldom-cited strength of Orange County’s community of business … From diversity to a couple of very different Donalds: Start with Donald Trump, who lost all sorts of business by talking too much, leading the PGA to move its Grand Slam of Golf from Trump National in Rancho Palos Verdes to the Resort at Pelican Hill. The Newport Coast gem is the pride of Donald Bren, of course, and he remained characteristically quiet as he tucked the latest feather in his cap … Not that East Coast TV personalities have nothing to offer OC—the local hospitality trade will welcome Katie Couric in from the Hamptons for VidCon’s July 23-25 run at the Anaheim Convention Center, where the crowd is expected to be up significantly from the 18,000 or so last year. VidCon has booked about twice the space it took last year … A couple of Southern California’s more controversial characters made an OC-L.A. hookup last week when ousted American Apparel founder Dov Charney enlisted the aid of Nativo Lopez and his Santa Ana-based Hermandad Mexicana—an immigrants’ rights advocacy group that’s shown an ability to cause a stir here and there—in a bid to organize blue-collar workers at the fashion label … Michael Robby of the Renaissance ClubSport in Aliso Viejo says there are all kinds of ways to look at the hotel market in South Orange County, including a view that puts the 174-room member of the Marriott family in the picture when it comes to full-service establishments in the area. The roster is due to grow with the Marriott-branded property under way in the Irvine Spectrum, a project by Bob Olson, whose R.D. Olson Development was a partner in building the Renaissance ClubSport. The Spectrum looks plenty ready for the new Marriott with its crop of corporate addresses. It’s notable that the Renaissance ClubSport’s hometown also punches above its weight when it comes to the corporate landscape, a profile that will rise further if Five Point Communities goes ahead with plans for an IPO. The developer would no doubt debut with a value of at least $1 billion, making it the fourth publicly traded company based in Aliso Viejo—with a population of just 50,000—to top the milestone (see related story on Office Sale, page 1; Data Drill, page 75).
