Major indices were down sharply in early trading on global economic fears and a decline in oil futures to a six-year-low, with some recovery by midday.
The S&P 500 was down 1.8% to 1,935.03. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 1.6% to 16,205.43. The Nasdaq was down 1.3% to 4,643.23.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond was down 1.6% to 2.02%.
The price of gold was down 0.3% to $1,155.

Newport Beach-based Clean Energy Fuels Corp. was up 4% to $4.18 and a $378 million market cap. Lake Forest-based Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide Inc. was up 11.5% to $1.36 and a $38 million market cap.
