The S&P 500 rose 0.52% to 2,022.61 in midday trading.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.56% to 17,481.23 and the Nasdaq rose 0.17% to 4,631.52.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond went up 0.64% to 2.26%.
The price of gold was down 1.77% to $1,147.
TECHNOLOGY
Microsemi Corp. rose 3.6% to $26.20 and a market cap of $2.5 billion as investors bid up the stock prior to the semiconductor maker’s quarterly earnings report, which is expected after markets close tomorrow.
HEALTHCARE
Irvine-based dental laser maker Biolase Inc. was down 5.4% to $2.30 and a market cap of $100 million. It reported slightly higher third quarter net revenue of $12.7 million, up from $12.3 million year-over-year, which shaved quarterly losses—$3.5 million this year compared with $4 million last year. But for the first nine months of 2014 net revenue is down 16%, $34.4 million compared with $41.2 million, and Biolase is set to close Friday on a $35 million private placement: 14.1 million shares at $2.39 a share, and warrants for 9.2 million shares at an exercise price of $4 a share. It currently has 43.9 million shares outstanding.
