The S&P 500 rose 0.35% to 1,993.47 in midday trading Thursday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.47% to 17,058.69, while the Nasdaq was flat at 4,531.52.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond fell 0.87% to 2.40%.
The price of gold was down 1.52% to $1,275.50.
HEALTHCARE
Irvine-based medical device maker Edwards Lifesciences Corp. was up 1.3% to $98.84 and a market cap of $10.5 billion. JMP Securities in New York City raised its price target from $97 to $120 and reiterated a “market outperform” rating citing physician confidence in and adoption of the company’s technology.
APPAREL
Apparel companies were up on sector strength and reports of a projected increase in the athletic apparel market by 50% to $100 billion by 2020. Huntington Beach-based Quiksilver Inc. was up 5.5% to $3.28 and a market cap of $560 million. Irvine-based Tilly’s Inc. was up 1.9% to $8.24 and a market cap of $231 million. After early morning declines Anaheim-based Pacific Sunwear of California Inc. was flat at $2.15 and a market cap of $148.2 million. Foothill Ranch-based Wet Seal Inc. was up 3.3% to 0.91 and a market cap of $77 million.
