The Irvine Co. has been given the go-ahead to start what is being described as the largest affordable rental project being built in California right now, for a big mixed-use development it is overseeing in Silicon Valley.
The Newport Beach-based developer is working with Sacramento-based St. Anton on the 196-unit complex in Santa Clara. The mid-rise project received approval from that city this month.
Irvine Co. previously worked with St. Anton, a builder of affordable housing with an office in Newport Beach, on a 225-unit project at the Tustin Legacy development that opened about four years ago.
The Santa Clara apartments are being built on part of a 45-acre former industrial site that is being redeveloped into a transit-oriented neighborhood that will ultimately have 4,500 homes and 106,000 square feet of retail.
The project will begin construction next year, according to local reports.
