Guiding Principles of Public Universities

Howard Gillman, chancellor of University of California-Irvine, believes that every public research university should have a commitment to excellence in the investigation of truth, access for all groups of people, and public service and serving the community. Below, he shares more on his ‘north stars’ and leadership ideas for UCI.

• On a commitment to excellence in the investigation of truth: “You can’t be a great university unless you have tremendous faculty and students who are discovering and learning things at the highest-level.”

• On access for all groups and individuals: “It doesn’t do any good to create great institutions of higher learning if only small numbers of people or more privileged people have access to it. We’re very proud of the national recognition we have on opening our doors to everyone of all backgrounds.”

• On a commitment to public service and serving the community: “The point of us doing this work is that we think generating knowledge is useful to a free and democratic society.”

• On the privilege and responsibility of leading a public research university: “You have to have a commitment to integrity and accountability to the communities you serve.”
