The Ensign Group Inc., a San Juan Capistrano-based owner and operator of skilled nursing homes, has started the year with a trio of acquisitions.
On Feb. 1, it bought Arrowhead Springs Healthcare, a 119-bed skilled nursing facility in San Bernardino, and Desert Mountain Care Center, a 99-bed skilled nursing facility in Indio.
In January, it also bought the operations of Estrella Health and Rehabilitation Center, a 161-bed skilled nursing facility in Avondale, Ariz.
The company on Feb. 9 reported 2021 revenue grew 9.5% to $2.6 billion while adjusted net income grew at a faster pace, 19%, to $207.2 million.
“In spite of the unprecedented challenges, the pandemic has forced us to become stronger, more agile, and allowed us to develop strategic local advantages that will continue to bear fruit even when the pandemic eventually subsides,” Chief Executive Barry Port said in a statement.
In the past 13 months, it has added 20 facilities and now has a portfolio of 248 healthcare operations across 13 states. Ensign owns 101 real estate assets. Each of the businesses runs independently by over 28,000 employees.
The company shows no signs of slowing down. Ensign projects the population over 65 will nearly double to almost 100 million by 2060.
Port said Ensign is “actively seeking opportunities to acquire real estate and to lease both well-performing and struggling skilled nursing, senior living and other healthcare related businesses throughout the United States.”
