Argyroses Give on Both Sides of Bristol; Happy Birthday Bobby Mac!

It will be tough to find a clearer example of acting locally and thinking globally than the Argyros family will provide this week. Julia and George are due at the Segerstrom Center for a low-key midweek groundbreaking on the civic plaza that will bear their name. Daughter Stephanie Argyros, meanwhile, will host an event to benefit UNICEF a day later and just across the street at the Louis Vuitton store at South Coast Plaza … You might have noticed a touch of local drama amid the tea leaves if you noticed that the overview of area museums in the most recent issue of the Irvine Company Resort Properties division’s Pelican Hill magazine excluded the Orange County Museum of Art, which hopes to sell its land in Newport Center for a high-rise development by Related Companies, and eventually decamp to the Segerstrom Center. That’s the same land Irvine Co. donated, and word around Newport Center indicates Donald Bren isn’t thrilled with the proposed 25-story Museum Tower … You might have noticed the local drama got much thicker if you noticed a letter in Stu News Newport from Keith Curry, a member of the City Council there, who charged that a petition drive for a public referendum on the Museum Tower succeeded despite “an unprecedented deceitful media campaign, including paid thugs to intimidate petition circulators and signers.” Curry said the referendum now could be derailed on a technicality, and called on his fellow councilmembers to instead reverse course and rescind approvals for the project … Our own Rick Reiff is somewhere between local and global—call it regional—with his latest growth spurt, which puts his Inside OC show on Ellis Communications’ KDOC-TV. The station broadcasts from Santa Ana and reaches 5.6 million homes throughout Southern California. The new exposure complements the show’s regular weekly runs on PBS SoCal-TV and Cox cable … The Breitling Huntington Beach Airshow is bound to draw globally and boost the local economy—the event attracted 560,000 visitors over its inaugural run last year, filling hotels in its hometown and beyond. It will get an early start on planning and photo ops, thanks to a couple of daredevils from the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels unit, which headlines this year’s event. The pilots plan a Jan. 12 “technical evaluation flyover” to be followed immediately by a press briefing at the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Reserve Base. That should allow plenty of time for pilots and promoters to prepare for this year’s show, which is slated for Sept. 29 to Oct. 1 … Credit Concordia U Business School Dean Stephen Christensen with a global expansion for his local Teen Entrepreneur Academy and business plan competition, which will head to China for a weeklong course in Beijing at the end of this month. Winners will get scholarships to the Teen Entrepreneur Academy summer program at Concordia this July … Sullivan says: Hard to believe by his looks that Bobby McDonald, the long-serving heart and soul of the Black Chamber of Commerce of Orange County, has turned 70.
