Costa Mesa-based Volcom Inc. is buying a seller of its clothes in Japan, the company said Tuesday.
Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. Volcom didn’t give the name of the company it’s buying. It has worked with the company for 15 years, Volcom said.
“Acquiring our Japanese distributor is part of Volcom’s international growth strategy, and we look forward to further enhancing our presence throughout Japan,” Chief Executive Richard “Wooly” Woolcott said.
The move is the latest by Volcom to expand its global operations. Last year, the company made a big push into Europe by taking over sales of its clothes there from companies that had licensed the Volcom brand.
Volcom designs clothes inspired by surfing, skateboarding and music. Like other apparel makers, the company first expanded abroad by licensing its brand to other companies and collected royalties on their sales.
Now Volcom is following in the steps of Huntington Beach-based Quiksilver Inc. and others by taking over the sale of its clothes around the world.
The buy of Volcom’s Japanese distributor isn’t surprising: Late last year, the company said it could take over sales of clothes in Japan, said analyst Mitch Kummetz of Robert W. Baird & Co.
Volcom “will likely continue to pursue such opportunities,” he said.
