Foothill Ranch-based mall retailer Wet Seal Inc. reported its second straight month of disappointing sales with results for July.
The company, which runs stores selling clothes for teen girls and young women, said sales at stores open at least a year fell 12.1% in July, worse than the 10.2% analysts were expecting.
In June, Wet Seal’s same-store sales fell 11%, worse than analysts’ expectations of 9.1%.
The company runs 496 stores, including 415 Wet Seal stores for teen girls and 81 Arden B. stores for young women.
In July, Wet Seal led the company’s same-store sales drop with a 12.3% decline. Arden B. was down 11.2%.
Total sales for the month fell 8% from a year earlier to $42.7 million.
“The effects of the challenging economic environment continued to hamper sales,” said Ed Thomas, Wet Seal’s chief executive.
