Lake Forest-based Red Digital Cinema Corp., a digital camera startup headed by Oakley Inc. founder Jim Jannard, has recovered a prototype camera, lenses and other gear stolen from the company late last month.
All but some computers have been recovered after Red hired a team of private investigators to track them down, according to Engadget.com, an electronics news Web site.
The motive for the theft is unclear.
Jannard offered a $100,000 reward for details leading to an arrest and conviction of the thieves.
Red is a passion turned side project for Jannard, a photography buff. The company has come up with a high-resolution digital camera for shooting movies and other productions.
The camera, which is set to sell for $17,500, could be produced by the end of the year. The first models are set to ship in spring.
Red hopes to sell directors and others on the camera as a cheaper, easy way to make movies with quality similar to film.
