Nevada regulators OK a PacifiCare Medicare supplement plan

PacifiCare Life and Assurance Co., a subsidiary of Santa Ana-based PacifiCare Health Systems Inc., said last week that it will start selling its new individual health insurance plan for Medicare beneficiaries in Nevada.

The plan, called Secure Horizons Medicare Supplement, is intended to provide coverage and benefits that fill gaps in coverage provided under traditional Medicare. Among other things, it will provide its holders discounts for prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, vision, hearing and some alternative medicine treatments, such as chiropractic and acupuncture services.

PacifiCare said that it will start enrolling Nevada residents later this month, with effective dates starting in October. PacifiCare already has approval to market its new Medicare supplement plan in California, Arizona and Oklahoma, and awaits approvals in three other states.

PacifiCare said it expects to enroll up to 1 million seniors within five years. The Medicare supplement plan is part of the company’s ongoing effort to diversify its business beyond its commercial and Medicare HMO base.
