NetPack Inc., an Irvine company that plans to launch a line of kiosks that sell cards used to download commercial software from the Internet, has secured the electronic rights to an upcoming Julia Roberts biography, “Pretty Superstar.”
The deal comes on the heels of an agreement that will allow the company to set up shop in more than 10,000 stores on military bases throughout the world, it’s largest single distribution channel to date.
The company hopes its line of kiosks, which sell the rights to download software from companies signed onto the system, taps into the impulse purchases of typical retail shoppers while cutting out the cost of packaging software on shrink-wrapped CD-ROMs and shipping them to conventional retailers.
