Moreno: Leaving it to the Lawyers

A day after the Anaheim City Council voted to go ahead with its lawsuit against the Angels, Arte Moreno was doing what he does best.

“I’ll let the attorneys handle that,” Moreno said of his legal battle with Anaheim over the renaming of the baseball team to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. “We did what we needed to do to secure the (long-term) economic health of the team.”

Moreno, who made waves in January with the name change, again portrayed the move as good for fans in a Wednesday interview on Jim Rome’s talk show on XTRA Sports AM 570.

The interview was Moreno’s first after the Anaheim City Council voted Tuesday night to pursue its lawsuit against his Angels Baseball LP.

Anaheim contends the team’s lease at Angel Stadium of Anaheim requires it to go by “Anaheim Angels.”

Moreno, who bought the team in 2003, declined to say anything more about Anaheim’s decision.

The name change stands to bring in more revenue, including from TV coverage of games and advertising, Moreno said. That, he argued, could mean lower ticket and other prices for fans.

Moreno already has won two rounds against Anaheim in court, the last time on Jan. 21 when Orange County Superior Court Judge Peter Polos’ refused a preliminary injunction against the name change.
