Medical Device Maker Raises $9M

Cianna Medical Inc., an Aliso Viejo-based women’s healthcare device company, has raised a $9 million first round of venture capital financing.

Investors include the Fog City Fund of San Francisco, Windamere Venture Partners of La Jolla and several individuals.

Cianna plans to use the money to help commercialize its Savi device, which provides high-dose radiation therapy for women who have had lumpectomy surgery for breast cancer.

The financing is a sign that Savi was a “breakthrough technology” that gives physicians and patients more treatment options, Chief Executive Jill Anderson said in a release.

Cianna was spun off last year from BioLucent Inc., which was acquired for $70 million by Hologic Inc., a Massachusetts-based device maker.
