State Economy

It is both sad and intriguing to watch the maneuvering by so many

different advocacy groups as the death throes of a bloated and unsustainable government set in.

Despite the reasonable and conciliatory remarks by our new governor at his swearing-in, it certainly appears that the struggle preceding the recall has resumed unabated with all the attendant bad behavior.

I would be intrigued to see an objective analysis of the proportion of tax benefit realized by businesses versus homeowners. After having been both a chief executive and businessman and a homeowner for 35 years, I sure don’t see the disparity alluded to here. All of my various properties and most of those my peers own are taxed to nearly full market value.

But I find it even more tragic that there is such a widespread lack of understanding about basic economics among so many voters of all parties. Government is consuming vastly too much of our GDP in California.

Keep beating up business and wealth and it will continue to leave and take the jobs.

Re Sir Eldon Griffiths’ attacks on John F. Kennedy (Dec. 8 Viewpoint):

Notwithstanding the human failings that have been chronicled since his death, John Kennedy’s intelligence, courage and devotion to public service inspired a generation of young people to look beyond themselves and strive to make our nation a better place. Many of us have benefited from the fruits of that inspiration.

Before repeating his views on Kennedy, Sir Eldon might consider a similar analysis of the House of Windsor in his native land.

Election Law

On Dec. 10, 2003, the First Amendment succumbed to mortal wounds inflicted by five

black-robed assassins, armed with the blunt instrument of McCain-Feingold and intoxicated by a potent mixture of sophistry and hubris.
