Quiet Achiever
The Waltos Group of Northwestern Mutual Financial Network in Newport Beach recognized Jack Shaw with its Quiet Achievers Award. The award singles out unsung individuals who make a difference in the county socially or economically. Along with his wife, Ellen Shockro, Shaw created El Viento, Oak View Renewal Partnership and Healthy Smiles for Kids of Orange County. These organizations provide scholarships and oral health for students from Oakview School in Huntington Beach and all of OC. Shaw has been involved in the Children First Advisory Board and the United Way Leaders Society.
Jamie Martinez Wood was nominated for the 2008 Carter G. Woodson award for her book, Latino Writers & Journalists. The book is a collection of biographies of Latino writers and journalists and includes more than 70 personal interviews.
Tim Wallach was named 2007 Saddleback College Alumni of the Year at the Saddleback Rhythm and Soul Gala. Proceeds from the event were directed for scholarships and educational programs at the college. Wallach was at Saddleback from ’76-’77 and played Major League baseball for the Montreal Expos, Los Angeles Dodgers and California Angels. Currently, Wallach is the batting coach at Orange Lutheran High School.
The Latin Business Association presented Raul Nunez and Roar Building Services Inc. with the Business of the Year award in the “under $5 million” category. The awards recognize outstanding business achievements by Latino companies.
Nine community managers at Lake Forest-based Professional Community Management of California Inc. were awarded the Certified Community Association Manager credential. Sue Evans, Janet Fitzpatrick, Nick Mokhlessin, Dee Dee Stephens, Linda Stouffer, Wendy Bucknum, Jayson Benanti, Eron Kaylor and Doug Ward earned credentials. To receive the CCAM credential, managers complete four and a half days of training on association management, state law and ethics.
Rita Moreno was honored with Chapman University’s Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award at the 26th Annual American Celebration gala. Moreno won Emmy, Grammy and Tony awards as well as an Oscar for her performance as Anita in “West Side Story.” The gala featured a Broadway-style revue, dinner and dancing.
San Juan Capistrano-based JSerra Catholic High School was named to the Catholic High School Honor Roll’s Top 50 list for the second consecutive year. The list recognizes the best 50 Catholic secondary schools in the U.S.
Several individuals and groups were honored in different categories at the 22nd Annual National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon. Walkie and Janet Ray of Newport Beach were recognized with the Spirit of Philanthropy Lifetime Achievement Award. Honorees in other categories were: Susan and James Swenson, Julie Brinkeroff-Jacobs and Don Jacobs, Eberhard Equipment, First American Corp., Don Schoendorfer, Cookie Moms Group and Pink Ribbon Clubs.
SunCal Cos. was recognized when its Pacifica San Juan community was named Masterplan Community of the Year. SunCal in Irvine received the award from the Sales and Marketing Council of Los Angeles and Ventura counties at the 25th annual ELAN Awards. The community also won awards for best brochure and best color ad.
Lions Clubs International Foundation was ranked “Best to Work With” in a survey of 42 global organizations that receive corporate aid for humanitarian projects. Lions Clubs was ranked first for its understanding of its corporate supports’ goals, execution of programs, accountability and program adaptability to communities. Lions Clubs can be found in Irvine.
Lawrence B. Werlin of Coastal Fertility Medical Center was named one of OC’s Physicians of Excellence in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. Dr. Werlin is founder and medical director of the medical center. He is also cofounder of Genesis network for reproductive health. The annual award is presented by the OC Medical Association and Orange Coast Magazine.
Seven partners at Rutan & Tucker LLP in Costa Mesa were named to a list of Best Lawyers in America 2008. The partners are Randall M. Babbush, Thomas J. Crane, Michael T. Hornak, John B. Hurlbut Jr., David C. Larsen, Paul F. Marx and Richard Montevideo. Six of these attorneys are returning to the list. Larsen and Marx have been on the list for at least 10 years.
East West Bancorp Inc. Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Julia Gouw received the award for Best CFO-Financial Institution, Banks/Midcap for 2006. The ranking was determined by Institutional Investor magazine.
