The National Investor Relations Institute and the University of California, Irvine Extension named Jon D. Kline, chief financial officer of San Clemente-based Sunstone Hotel Investors Inc., Orange County’s CFO of the Year. Kline was recognized for his skills and leadership in helping to achieve short- and long-term goals for the company. Sunstone owns 60 hotels, including the 403-room Hyatt Regency Newport Beach (photo).
The 2005 Keystone Credibility Award was given to Orange County Teachers Federal Credit Union at the 2005 CUSO Financial Services LP Annual Conference for its investment program. The award is given to a credit union investment program that ensures members receive the highest quality investment services. A main factor the OC credit union was chosen was its Retirement Forum, a free half-day seminar to help members plan for retirement.
Penelope Parmes, partner at Costa Mesa-based Rutan & Tucker LLP, was given the President’s Award by the American Inns of Court in recognition of her service as founder and former president of the Warren J. Ferguson American Inn of Court serving OC. The Inns are groups of judges, lawyers, law professors and law students who meet to further ethics, skills and professionalism in the field.
The Small Business Administration awarded California State University, Fullerton, a $1.6 million contract to oversee the SBA’s regional small business development centers in Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties.
The Western Building Show in San Francisco honored Baywood Development and Scheurer Architects, both of Newport Beach, with Gold Nugget Awards in the categories of Home of the Year and Best Residential Detached Community of the Year for their Baywood Collection at Santaluz.
Irvine’s MBK Homes Ltd. and California Pacific Homes were winners of the Eliant 2005 Award for the highest-rated communities, representatives and companies/divisions in the category of Overall Experience (Purchase Through First Year) Single Division at the National Roundtable on Homebuyer Satisfaction.
The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers’ Alice Parker Award was given to Pacific Chorale and its artistic director John Alexander in recognition of its chorale ensemble’s innovative presentation of challenging repertory.
Pollstar, a trade publication for the performance industry, named Glendale, Ariz.’s Glendale Arena Best New Major Concert Venue in North America. It was designed by Lisa Slayman, a principal at Newport Beach-based Slayman Design Associates Inc.
The city of Anaheim received two awards from the Orange County Section of the American Planning Association for two of its projects. Anaheim received the Comprehensive Planning Award for cities with a population greater than 100,000 for its general plan update. It also received the Planning Implementation Award for cities with a population greater than 100,000 for its planning for the Platinum Triangle redevelopment area.
The Irvine Barclay Theatre gave its 2005 Jade Awards to Tom Nielsen, Dick and Ann Sim, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band in acknowledgement of their leadership, philanthropy and creativity.
Huntington Beach-based HouseHunt Inc., a company that provides online information to homeowners, buyers and sellers, named five real estate agents to its Hall of Fame. From Prudential California Realty: Larry Fox at the Laguna Beach office and Lisa Hungerford at the Mission Viejo office. From Century 21: Dick Lobin and Rich McHugh, both at the Huntington Beach office, and George Barr at the Mission Viejo office.
Keri Gee Barnett, owner of Huntington Beach-based PRIDEA, a public relations and professional speaking agency, received the Distinguished Service Award for the Individual PR Person of the Year in OC from the OC chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.
The Public Relations Society of America, OC chapter, gave two Protos Annual Awards to Tustin-based Echo Media Group. One was for its business-to-business press release for client UC Irvine Extension’s Spa Management Program, and one was given in the special event category for its pool safety media demonstration for client SonarGuard Pool Security System in Irvine.
Kori Lee Garner of Irvine’s Kori Lee & Associates, a public relations agency, received a Protos Award of Excellence for a media relations program she developed with Suzanne Collier of Brea-based Suzanne Collier Public Relations. The program was developed for client Sign Clemente, a commercial sign making company in San Clemente.
The Orange County Sanitation District was the recipient of three Protos Awards from the Public Relations Society of America, OC chapter. A first place award was given in the community relations category in recognition of the district’s work for the Groundwater Replenishment System’s construction outreach program. The program was a collaborative effort of the district and Porter Novelli’s Irvine office. Two Awards of Excellence were given to the collaborative work of the district and Johnson Ukropina, an Irvine-based creative marketing company, in the audio visual presentation category for the “Food Service Establishment Fats, Oils and Grease” training video. The other was given in the multicultural campaign category for the Fats, Oils and Grease Toolbox public education being translated into five languages. The toolbox reminds people not to pour such substances down drains.
DevicePharm LLC in Irvine won gold, silver and bronze awards at the 22nd Annual Healthcare Advertising Awards presented by Healthcare Marketing Report, a publication for the healthcare industry. The award recognizes excellence in creative for the healthcare industry.
The 2005 Summit Creative Award was given to Irvine-based R & W; Creative Group for its work for client Mattel Inc.’s Hot Wheels collectors brand. The company was chosen from more than 3,000 international advertising agencies, video production companies and multimedia companies.
Vaughan Hargrave of Tustin was honored with the 2004/2005 Safety Professional of the Year Award by the OC chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers in Anaheim. A member since 1992, Hargrave was elected chapter delegate for 2005/2006 and also serves as chapter representative on the California Governmental Affairs Council.
The Association for Corporate Growth gave the 2005 Spotlight Deal Award to the acquisition of Irvine-based Ocean Pacific Apparel Corp. by New York City’s Warnaco Group Inc. The award is given annually to a company that participated in a corporate financing, merger, or acquisition of significant size, complexity or unique OC character. George Wall, senior corporate partner at Costa Mesa-based Rutan & Tucker LLP, was lead counsel to Ocean Pacific in the deal.
The Second Annual Legacy Awards given by Ilona & Co. at RE/MAX Real Estate Services recognized four Huntington Beach family-run businesses: Ed and Jeffrey Laird of Coatings Resource; the Valenzuela family of Mario’s Mexican Seafood Restaurant; the Abdel family of Jack’s Surfboards; and Robert Mandic Jr., in memory of his father Robert Mandic Sr. of Mandic Motors Inc.
Judy Neal, risk services coordinator at Coast Community College District, was named 2005 District-site Manager of the Year by the district.
The Society of American Business Editors and Writers named Jonathan Lansner, business columnist for the Orange County Register, as president.
Nicholas Davis was named president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Davis, who resides in Laguna Beach, is the owner of Smiles By Davis in Newport Beach.
Edward Jones gave the 2005 Winner’s Circle award for outstanding sales and service to investment representative Robert Foley. He is one of 883 people selected from more than 9,000 to receive the award.

Newport Beach-based Fletcher Jones Motorcars was recognized by the Southern California Broadcasters Association with the Award for Outstanding Creative Excellence in Broadcasting for its ads.
LAING CEO INTO HALL OF FAME
The California Building Industry Association named H. Lawrence “Larry” Webb, chief executive of Newport Beach-based John Laing Homes, to its Hall of Fame. The association’s Hall of Fame is made up of 153 people who have contributed to the industry and the community. John Laing Homes also was named residential construction’s Most Admired Builder of the Year by Big Builder magazine. In addition, the homebuilder received the highest rankings in a 2005 New Home Builder Customer Satisfaction Study for the Orange County market by J.D. Power and Associates.
ARTS CENTER GUILD RECEIVES HONOR
Orange County Performing Arts Center’s the Guilds of the Center received an award for Outstanding Volunteer Organization at the Sixth Annual Orange County Arts Awards. Among the criteria for selection was its leadership role as a support group.
DELOITTE & TOUCHE: GOLDEN KEY AWARD
Orange County United Way presented the Golden Key Award to Deloitte & Touche USA LLP in Costa Mesa for its dedication to the community and for its annual campaign contributions. Deloitte & Touche contributed $208,815 to the group.
