IF WE DIDN’T HAVE GAS PRICES AND THE ACADEMY AWARDS TO COMPLAIN about, we might not have anything to complain about at all.
Good news just keeps gushing. Consider the news from a single day last week: Orange County crime continues to drop, local United Way giving surges 11%, to a record $23.8 million, and UCLA sees the roaring state economy pushing personal income up 7.6% and creating a half million jobs this year, the most since 1978. That’s about when many of today’s new corporate titans were in diapers or nursery school.
Maybe that helps explain why so much of politics is absorbed in the trivial. With everything so good, there are no big issues to galvanize around. Reformers and crusaders sound strident or irrelevant or even worse, scary.
So we have silly debates, bland platforms and character assassination.
Oh well, who cares? Back to work
