The George Hoag Family Foundation donated $5 million to the Hoag Memorial Hospital Foundation Presbyterian in Newport Beach. The gift establishes the Grace E. Hoag chair position within Hoag Cancer Center. The endowment will help broaden hospital access to cancer research and improve Hoag Cancer Center survival rates.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Orange County/Inland Empire chapter sent 58 athletes to the King’s Trail Triathlon in Hawaii, raising $350,000 for blood cancer research. Additionally, Maita Smith of Cypress was named Woman of the Year for her role in fundraising, generating $14,159 on her own. Smith is owner and president of Dining Around Towne & Tastey Chef Caterer in Cypress and Randazzo Italian Cafe in Huntington Beach.

Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo raised $300,000 at its annual golf tournament presented by Park Place Lexus Mission Viejo. The money will be used for the hospital’s expansion. Some 270 golfers attended the tournament, auction and cocktail reception. Other sponsors were Philadelphia-based Aramark Corp. and St. Louis-based McCarthy Building Cos.

Orange County United Way in Irvine received a $250,000 donation from Edison International. The money will go to community impact programs that help low-income people gain job skills. The United Way focuses on higher education and helping people obtain financial stability.

Habitat for Humanity of Orange County in Santa Ana received $250,000 from the Bank of America Charitable Foun-dation. The grant contributes to Habitat’s new Calle Rolando neighborhood of affordable homes for disabled veterans and other families in San Juan Capistrano.

The Reds, Whites & Greens Charity Golf Classic in Costa Mesa raised $240,351 for the OC affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The money will be used for breast cancer research and education programs. The event featured wine tasting and auctions in addition to golf.

The Raise Foundation in Irvine received a $90,192 grant from the Baxter International Foundation in Illinois. The Raise Foundation was created to stop child abuse. The grant will fund Preventing Child Abuse by Strengthening Families, a two-year project aimed at stopping child abuse through education and advocacy.

St. Joseph Health Foundation in Orange gave $72,388 to Creer: Comunidad y Familia to increase physical fitness opportunities for low-income San Juan Capis-trano residents. The money will be used to expand Latin-inspired exercise programs, such as its ballet “Corazones Alegres.”

Jessica Erstad’s Not So Serious Women’s Golf Outing raised $66,000 for the Child Abuse Prevention Center in Orange. The money will be used for the center’s parent education, prevention and mental health programs. Angels Baseball LP, Robertson Griege & Thoele, the Anaheim Ducks/Honda Center and Orange Coast Magazine sponsored the event.

Employees from Ernst & Young LLP in Irvine attended the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County annual picnic for an afternoon of mentoring and games. Another 40 employees from Ernst & Young worked at a Habitat For Humanity build. Mike Shangraw and Paul Crowley organized the crew of workers.

The Orange County Community Foundation in Irvine made an $8,000 environmental grant to the Tustin Public Schools Foundation. The funds will support the Go Green Tustin initiative, which encourages schools to reduce waste and educate students about conservation. The initiative was created earlier this year by the Boeing Employees Community Fund.

Huntington Beach-based Universal Floor-ing Inc. sponsored the first Universal Flooring team building regatta, raising $8,000 for the Orangewood Children’s Foundation. Eight teams of local designers, general contractors, developers and flooring manufacturers set sail on 31-foot boats.

The Giving section that ran on Sept. 8 should have said the Warne Family Foundation gave $5,000 to Santa Ana nonprofit Think Together.
