California Bank & Trust Grants Child’s Wish

The Orange County corporate banking division of California Bank & Trust is sending a child from the Make-A-Wish Foundation and his family on a Disney cruise. The bank gave $7,823 to the foundation. It raised the money through donations from customers and employees. Typically, $6,000 is the average amount it takes to pay for such a trip. The child, Tyler, is 6-years-old and has a rare brain tumor called Rhabdomysarcoma.

California State University, Fullerton, renamed its Science Laboratory Center Dan Black Hall in recognition of alumni Dan Black’s $4.2 million gift to the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Black’s donation was a combination of cash and pledges. In addition, Black contributes $75,000 annually to support the Dan Black program in Physics and Business, as well as student scholarships.

Orange County businesswoman and philanthropist Marion Knott gave $3 million to Chapman University’s film school. The film school needs $9 million to complete its $41 million Marion Knott Studios project, a state-of-the-art building in Orange that will house Chapman’s Lawrence and Kristina Dodge College of Film and Media Arts.

The Allergan Foundation gave $2 million to the University of California, Irvine, to advance eye research and treatment. The foundation is Irvine-based Allergan Inc.’s philanthropic arm. Allergan’s donation is going to help UC Irvine conduct clinical eye research, develop programs and technologies, working with others in the industry.

Sea Cliff Country Club and Winn Grips raised $100,000 for Huntington Beach-based Community Care Health Centers, a nonprofit health center in Orange County. The money was raised at the First Annual CCHC Golf Tournament held at the SeaCliff Country Club last month.

The Valiant Women support group of Mission Hospital raised more than $80,000, a record amount, at its 10th Annual Afternoon Tea. The fund-raiser was for the expansion of the hospital’s Emergency Department and Gotschall Family Trauma Pavilion.

The Avon Foundation Breast Care Fund awarded a $75,000 one-year grant to the YWCA North Orange County to help women over 40 years of age and who are uninsured or underinsured to receive early breast cancer detection services. It is the sixth year the program has received money from Avon.

Coastal Creations Catering and the Dana Point Yacht Club raised $32,000 for the Performing Animal Welfare Society. The group is recognized internationally for its leadership in the protection of captive wildlife.

Coastline’s Student Advisory Council pledged $30,000 to the Coastline Community College Foundation Endow the Future campaign. Endow the Future was established to create a permanent general funding source for Coastline Community College.

Paul Newman and his not-for-profit food company Newman’s Own donated $10,000 to Newport Beach-based Friends In Service to Humanity to upgrade its information system. Friends in Service to Humanity works to prevent hunger and homelessness in Orange County.

Twenty-five members of the Pacific West Association of Realtors participated in Paint Your Hearts Out’s annual Anaheim paint day, by painting one of 32 homes. Paint Your Hearts Out gives $7,000 for exterior home and yard improvements to poor senior and disabled homeowners.

Newport Beach-based Divegear Inc. has begun an ongoing mission to provide free wheelchairs to those in need in Fiji. The cost of each wheelchair is $44 and they are sent to Fiji in batches of 550. More than 2,200 wheelchairs have been sent to Fiji for this mission. Susan Shaw, President of Divegear, travels to Fiji to help with the distribution.

The Peter and Masha Plotkin Memorial Foundation gave five Laguna College of Art & Design students scholarships worth $500. The students, in the fine arts drawing and painting program, were: Daniel Heidner, Marie Kwon, Daina Mattis, Colleen Police and Christian Ramirez. The foundation has awarded more than 700 scholarships to fine arts and performing arts students in Southern California.

Three OC businesswomen joined A Charity For Charities’ Holidazzle committee: Nella Webster, regional vice president at First American Trust; Lee Ann Canaday, owner of the Canady Group Realty and Jacquin Anastasio, vice president at Commercial Capital Bank. Holidazzle is held in December and features dinner theatre and dancing to celebrate different holiday traditions. Funds raised are donated to OC nonprofits.
