Gateway Plans Nashville Plant

Irvine-based Gateway Inc. said Wednesday it plans to build a manufacturing plant in Nashville, Tenn.

The computer maker expects to employ 300 workers with a payroll of $8 million within the first year.

The plant will be used to put together desktops, notebooks, servers and storage systems, as well as provide integration and software services. It will make computers for consumers, businesses, schools and government buyers.

Gateway said that one of its suppliers near Nashville is set to own a stake in the plant. The computer maker didn’t name the supplier.

Meanwhile, Gateway plans to close a call center in Kansas City, cutting 130 jobs there, according to a report in the Kansas City Star on Wednesday.

Gateway plans to consolidate the operations at its North Sioux City, S.D., facility in a bid to cut costs.

Shares of Gateway were trading at $1.74 on Wednesday, down from a 52-week high of $4.17.
